Oh, Chapter 15, no question about it. The showdown between Stefan and Damon, after centuries of beating around the bush with Damon keeping an eye on Stefan, and Stefan being oblivious about it. The rampant testosterone, the chemistry, and the innuendo of Damon taking Stefan's blood. Yum. It's also one of those scenes that makes me think that Damon doesn't actually have a burning hatred for Stefan, nor does he not give a damn about him, because I think that if either of those were true, he would have just killed Stefan. Instead he cares enough about Stefan that it's important to him that his brother knows how he feels and that he's the one in control. God, their relationship is so complex. I love it to pieces. :D

I too love the big.kickass.battle between them at the end. I wouldn't think of it as an sort of "innuendo" although one can certainly take that route; it's rather subjective. Maybe it's because lately my dad is on the binge with his Animal Plant/Discovery/National Geographic moods again, but I saw this last battle as truly a fight for dominance. Damon's resentment of Stefan since practically birth shines clearest in these final moments. Yet like a cat playing with its prey, Damon can't quite let go of the challenge. I see these two fighting in a way that reminds me - oddly enough - of the group power dynamics amongst wolves. It's a very Alpha sort of response, a reminder that while Stefan is his kin? He's still the one in control. Now that's just from Damon's point of view. Plus, there's a mix of this feeling playing the "brother's keeper". Stefan is also a remaining part of his "humanity" despite being hundreds years ago. And I feel it's also a major reason Elena has captured Stefan's attention immediately. She's a reminder to his past, no matter how brutal the turn out.

A second to my favorite scenes has to be the first time Elena and Stefan meet. I like the ominous tones, although readers knew better, it still was great watching how Elena felt at her first encounter with him.

1. When Elena first sees Damon in the gym. I always thought there was some good give and take there. And it always kinda upset me that Elena thought of Stefan right before she and Damon would have kissed. (I'm a Damon lover :D ).

2. Stefan's first Renaissance flashback...simply because I find Damon and Stefan's past intriguing and I wish it was expanded on more, maybe with Damon's thoughts.

This is my first post (am SO glad that these books are having a resurgence!!!!) so I thought this would be the best thread to start.

To me, the most iconic is Damon/the crow in the tree watching Elena in the opening pages of the book. I don't know why but it set the tone, the mood, for the whole series for me.

My other choice (albeit a distant second) would have to be Stefan showing up at school in his Porsche, with his sunglasses and leather jacket.

I'm exclusively an Elena fan, so for me it was the scene where the opened the coffer in Stefan's room, and found her apricot ribbon in it -- thereby discovering (with tears in her eyes) how long he had actually loved her -- even when she didn't think he did. When she opened that coffer, it was like she was opening his heart.

A close second would be Elena and Stefan's first kiss. I don't know if I've ever read a kiss described with such passion or tenderness.

The dumb supper was one of the bits that stood out for me when I read The Awakening recently - the invitation that Damon accepts and the fact that Elena was supposed to see her future husband... and got Damon.

Ahh Damon <3

I think for me, the one moment (well, series of moments strung together) that stands out is where Elena goes off with Tyler and co. after seeing Stefan with Caroline at the dance. From the part she impulsively decides to hang with them until Elena's kissing Stefan at the boardinghouse is just one big bundle of *awesome*. Specifically the part where Stefan beats up Tyler after he attempted to rape Elena in the cemetary, yelling at him all the while about what a gentleman does not do with ladies and Elena sees an emotional...nay, murderous Stefan. Also the whole scene in the boardinghouse where Elena, finally feeling again after the numbness that had settled over her from the attack, comes out swinging, demanding to know why Stefan hates her SO MUCH. I mean, she's fit to be tied, reaming him out about how he'll hang out with Caroline of all people, but won't even so much as look at her. Then Stefan tells her it is the furthest thing from hate. And they kiss. Dare I say, epically.

I think after you've read the whole series, that whole thing takes on a different light. You know why Stefan's been avoiding Elena and knowing that while she's tearing into him about hating her is just heartbreaking for Stefan. You know full well he could have (and maybe would have) killed Tyler in the cemetary if Elena had not stopped him. You know Stefan's been alone for far too long, and that he needs someone in his life, someone to help him 'rejoin the living' so to speak. Stefan's self loathing is on full display here, as is Elena's fierceness. I love how, after all the plotting and scheming to get Stefan to notice her, she just goes "screw it" and finds the most obnoxious and loud group of people, dancing and drinking....not the best choice by far, but one that finally did push Stefan into her orbit.

For me it's when Elena finds Stefan on the roof and the scenes that follow that when he tells her the story. Also the showdown at the end between the brothers.

I felt that part had some secret meaning to it. It seemed to almost hint that Damon could end up being with Elena in the end - as it was her "future husband" taking the seat she offered, just like what was supposed to happen when she did the spell. Haha. Seemed like a case of possible foreshadowing. :proud:
